March Gathers at noon.
March ends at The White House (1600 Pennsylvania AVE) about 3 blocks away.
Join the Sex Workers Outreach Project (SWOP-USA) as we march on Washington to demand rights for all sex workers! On Wednesday, December 17, 2008, advocates from across the nation will converge to mark the International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers. Together, we will take a stand for justice, dignity, and the freedom to do sex work safely and in dignity. We are calling for an end to the unjust laws, policing, shaming and stigma that oppress our communities and make us targets for violence. At this vibrant event, we will both honor the lives lost in 2008 and celebrate our vital movement. Some housing is available for out-of-towners - consider staying on to attend our big party that weekend. On Dec. 17th, SWOP-USA and its allies in harm reduction and social justice welcome your support as we march for sex workers rights!

Memorial Vigil by SWOP Chicago
YWCA 360 N Michigan at 7pm on Dec 17th.You are invited to attend the Sex Workers Outreach Project of Chicago's memorial vigil in observance of the International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers. This event will take place at 7pm on December 17, 2008, at the YWCA at 360 N. Michigan Ave., Chicago.
This event was created by Dr. Annie Sprinkle in response to the conviction of the Green River Killer, Gary Ridgway. Ridgway targeted sex workers because he believed he could kill them without ever being caught, since no one would notice their absence. The International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers is an annual observance to remember and honor those who have been brutalized and murdered because they are sex workers.
Violence against sex workers, such as assault, rape, and murder, often goes unreported out of fear of prosecution and shame, and more often goes unpunished due to stigma and stereotype. To deny the right of sex workers to live without the fear of violence and to deny the right of sex workers and their allies to seek justice for crimes against them is a denial of basic, fundamental human rights. Regardless of the rhetoric about sex work, there should be no debate about the atrocity of these continued assaults.
Studies by the Urban Justice Center found that 46% of indoor workers and 80% of street-based workers had experienced or had been threatened with violence. 14% of indoor workers and 27% of street-based workers experienced this violence committed by law enforcement officers. Only 16% of indoor sex workers went to law enforcement about a crime that happened to them. Another study by the Saint James Infirmary found that 56% of sex workers had experienced violence related to their work, and only 8% reported this violence.
We hope that you will stand with us to make the statement that no person deserves to be victim of violence for any reason, and that to ignore sex workers who continue to live in fear and violence is a denial of the fundamental rights of human beings. Thank you for your time.
